Lyophilised insert formulations for nasal drug delivery

Supervisor
Dr Fiona McInnes

Project Title
Lyophilised insert formulations for nasal drug delivery

Project Description
The nasal route is an attractive option for drug delivery of compounds which for some reason are not suitable for oral administration. A major drawback of nasal drug delivery can be the rapid mucociliary clearance rate, reducing the length of time the formulation is in contact with the mucosal surface. Lyophilised bioadhesive nasal insert formulations have been used in attempts to overcome this difficulty, and have the potential to be used for a variety of applications – e.g. extended release, anti-emetics, analgesics, peptides etc. The project will involve the formulation of active therapeutic compounds of interest with varying chemical properties into lyophilised nasal inserts. The effect of composition, concentration and nature of excipients on the behaviour of the dosages will be characterised, particularly in terms of drug release, adhesive properties, hydration behaviour, compatibility of excipients and relevant mechanical properties. Understanding the influence of drug/excipient variables on the performance of the formulation will enable rapid selection of candidate formulations as required for a particular therapeutic indication.
